Daf Porter (prototype 1964)
This vehicle was developed for the US army.
Only one was ever made and the production staff called it the porter mobile.
and sometimes the Fintstone mobile. :)
It was a failure that is an understatement.
but why ?
It has the controls in the right places.
It has a water jet with a rudder.
But it also had friction drive.
And on top of that friction steering through friction breaks.
Al that gave a lot of friction. :-)
It has a 500 cc boxer engine 15 hp at 3400 rpm
a variomatic gearbox (tread less gear changes) with one belt.
A PTO for the water jet.
This vehicle looked great on the drawing board.
So the lesson to be learned is;
Take a good look before you build your own :-)
The colour pictures where made at the DAF Museum Tongelsestr 27 Eindhoven, Nederland.
The B&W pictures came from the archives of the DAF Museum.
