| BARC - (LARC 60) in Koahshung, China Sort off :-)
Photo's and info send in by George Young. |
When preparing to leave Fort Story,
Virginia, to go to Koahshung 1958 BARCs 9 - 13 - 14 - 17 |
The BARCs where driven over road down to the Little Creek Naval Base, today a distance of 16 km and maybe 20 minutes by car. But in 1958 and with a BARC it was a diffent experiance.
In Little Creek the BARC's were picked by a 100 ton crane and deck-loaded on 2 civilian cargo ships. Fort Story at the time did not have the needed 100 ton crane. |
The 100 ton crane makes the BARC look small. but look at the size of the hoist in the right photo.
The civilian cargo ships transported the BARC's to Subic Bay Naval Base, Philippines,
In Subic Bay the BARC's where loaded on a Navy LSD ship, which transported them to the beach of Koahshung.
At the end of the tour in 1960 there was a Ceremony.
I have in my archive more photos of the BARC on Koahshung beach. |
Those photo's are made at the exact same time and location by Hugh W. Gillett.
